Alexis Sanchez escapes jail for tax fraud but Man Utd star's agent blasts 'nightmare' witch-hunt

Alexis Sanchez

The Chilean was handed a 16-month suspended sentence by Spanish authorities after admitting to wrongdoing during his time on the books at Barcelona

Manchester United’s Alexis Sanchez will not go to prison after admitting to tax fraud in Spain, but his agent has hit out at an “unfair” system making scapegoats of high-profile foreign figures.

The Chilean forward has been handed a 16-month suspended sentence after entering into a plea bargain with the relevant authorities.

His charges relate to a spell on the books at Barcelona between 2012 and 2013 and the defrauding of €1 million on image rights.

Sanchez is not the first to have faced punishment for said actions, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo enduring similar problems in Spain, and the 29-year-old’s representative has accused the system of being rigged against those to have committed mere “supposed crimes”.

Fernando Felicevich said in a lengthy statement posted on his social media accounts: “Today the Spanish tax agency has once again leaked details of an agreement between our representative Alexis Sanchez and Spanish prosecutors.

“Spanish prosecutors and its treasury department have placed more than 30 professional footballers in the same situation, accusing them of the same crimes and threatening them with prison sentences.

“Almost every member of the Real Madrid and Barcelona squad have been placed in this situation, even though these clubs use a standard pay formula for their first team which has been accepted by the Spanish treasury in the past.

“Throughout all these cases, whilst violating the rights of those under investigation, the repeated, continuous and obscene leaks have been an element of pressure on the players to force them to accept agreements like the one today, which once again has been leaked to the media.

“On some occasions, there has been no other way out but to surrender to the pressure, and to avoid worst injustices, accept unfair agreements like this one.

“Many players and managers have had to do the same thing, and many others will continue to do so.”

Wear
If I had to choose just one designer to wear all the time it would be Bella Freud - my friend, collaborator and confidante. For T-shirts, knits, tailoring and more, and even my favourite (1970) candle.
Coming soon (in store and online in March), my pick from spring/summer is her Trinidad jacket - perfect for travel (and work on location on either side of the camera). Tough enough for a desert storm but imbued with Bella’s flirty nonchalance, even worn over a tracksuit - or a bikini. My kind of uniform. Layer it up, add your own patches or badges, and channel Lauren Hutton in khaki and freckles. Just add adventure.

Gift
Charlotte Olympia Vanina clutch. A cherished gift. Worth the wait. (Order in advance for a special birthday). I blame Charlotte for my addiction to the highest of heels - I just got too used to being that tall. But her accessories prove just as seductive.
Say my name... Or just choose "Love" online. (The personalised Vanina clutch is only available to order in store - see herwebsite for locations).

The iconic Life House, designed by John Pawson in 2016, deep-sunk in a remote Welsh valley, is a place for "thinking, reflection and new perspectives". Shop
Bespoke Adidas pool slides. Too far in advance of summer and actual swimming, I was admiring my friend’s stripy socks and Adidas pool slides under the table at lunch when she casually mentioned the idea of customising online. Cue a satisfying game of colour coordination versus the clash versus black on black on black... and a present crisis solved via an IOU (allow a month ideally).
Colouring in, for big kids.

Nintendo Talks About Mario's Nipples And Confirms Toad's Head Is Not A Hat

 Mario's Nipples

Nintendo shocked the world when it showed shirtless Mario for Super Mario Odyssey. He has nipples but no belly button. What's up with that? In a new developer video, producer Yoshiaki Koizumi started off by saying the topic of Mario's nipples and belly button is something that he never expected players to discuss or be interested in.

Koizumi does not directly answer the question, "Why does Mario have nipples but no belly button?" unfortunately, but he still had more to say. Intriguingly, Koizumi said Nintendo thought about going back and potentially giving Mario a belly button.

"Once I heard that people were talking so much about Mario's belly button it made me start to think about whether we should revisit the topic on the design side," Koizumi said.

A belly button is what's left after doctors cut the umbilical cord at birth. You can have an innie or an outie. But Mario doesn't have either because he doesn't have a belly button at all. You know who also didn't have a belly button? Kyle XY.

Also in the video, Koizumi reveals that Toad's head is not a hat--that's just his head. He also talks about how the team added more coins out of "respect" for the testers. You can check out the full, albeit short, video embedded above.

If you're wondering, you can get the shirtless Mario outfit in Odyssey at the clothing store in the Cascade Kingdom for 1,000 coins.

Odyssey launched in October for Nintendo Switch. It has been a massive success, selling more than 9 million copies to become the best-selling first-party Switch game so far. It's also a critical darling, receiving high praise from critics and fans alike.

Asia markets join global stock plunge

Asia markets join global stock plunge

Asian markets plunged on Tuesday as investors dumped stocks following heavy falls in the US in anticipation of higher interest rates.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index sank 6.1% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 4.5%.

It comes after the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered its worst drop in more than six years on Monday.

A strengthening global economy and healthy corporate earnings had spurred world markets to record highs.

But the sell-off began last week after a solid US jobs report fuelled expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates faster than expected.

"Economic news from the US has been stronger than anticipated," said David Kuo, chief executive of financial services advisory Motley Fool.

"So, perversely, the market correction has been caused by positive economic news."

Markets in Asia typically follow the lead from the US. Elsewhere in the region, South Korea's Kospi index was down 2.6%, India's Sensex index sank 3.6%, and Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 gave up 3%.

US stock futures were pointing to more sharp falls when markets open on Tuesday.

What happened in the US?
On Monday the Dow Jones Industrial Average index tumbled 1,175 points, or 4.6% to close down at 24,345.75.

The decline was the largest in percentage terms for the Dow since August 2011, when markets dropped in the aftermath of "Black Monday" - the day Standard & Poor's downgraded its credit rating of the US.

The drop on the Dow was closely followed by the wider S&P 500 stock index, down 4.1% and the technology-heavy Nasdaq, which lost 3.7%.

The White House moved to reassure investors saying it was focused on "long-term economic fundamentals, which remain exceptionally strong".

Why is this happening?
The heavy losses in Asia track the slide on Wall Street. Investors are reacting to changes in the outlook for the American and global economy, and what that might mean for the cost of borrowing.

"The share selling....reflects a higher than previously anticipated interest rate environment," CMC Markets analyst Michael McCarthy said.

In response to that, investors moved to sell out of stocks and put money into assets like bonds which benefit from higher interest rates.

"This isn't a collapse of the economy. This isn't a concern that markets aren't going to do well," said Erin Gibbs, portfolio manager for S&P Global Market Intelligence.

"This is concern that the economy is actually doing much better than expected and so we need to re-evaluate," she said.

Will this have long term impact?
Analysts say investors in the short term, investors should be prepared for choppier stock markets.

Joel Prakken, chief US economist for IHS Markit, predicts share price gains will be limited over the next two years.

"The difference between this year and last year is we're going to see more periods of volatility like this as the market reacts to higher inflation," he said.

"We're just not used to it because it's been so long since we've had a significant correction."

However, he added that markets would need to deteriorate more significantly for him to start to worry about the broader economy.

Asian markets, on the other hand, have benefitted from record low US interest rates in the last decade because money has flowed into Asia in search of stronger returns. Analysts say the expected rate rises could impact Asia over the longer term.

Watford 4-1 Chelsea: Champions slump as Tiemoue Bakayoko sees red

watford vs chelsea

Watford piled the pressure on Antonio Conte as a late flurry of goals secured a thumping 4-1 win over 10-man Chelsea on Monday Night Football.

On a miserable night for the Premier League champions, the out-of-sorts Tiemoue Bakayoko was sent off after half an hour before Troy Deeney scored the opener from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute.

Chelsea, who were beaten 3-0 at home by Bournemouth in their last game, looked as though they might snatch a point when Eden Hazard scored a brilliant equaliser in the 82nd minute.

But Watford scored three times in seven minutes through Daryl Janmaat, Gerard Deulofeu and Roberto Pereyra to secure victory for new head coach Javi Gracia on his home debut.

While it was a perfect result for Gracia, it is likely to raise even more questions about Conte's future and how much longer he will remain in charge of Chelsea.

The visitors were under pressure from the start, with Abdoulaye Doucoure dragging a shot wide, Deulofeu shooting into the side-netting and Deeney missing a glorious chance from a corner when he sliced off target.

Willian spurned a good opening at the other end when he fired over from close range, but Chelsea otherwise rarely threatened.

They also lost possession too often, with the main culprit being Bakayoko, who was shown two yellow cards in five minutes and dismissed on the half-hour mark after catching Richarlison.

The first half got worse for Chelsea when Courtois came sliding out and caught Deulofeu in the box. Deeney stepped up and dispatched the penalty with the goalkeeper staying in the middle of the goal.

Watford went close to extending their lead in the second half as Deulofeu and Richarlison both shot narrowly wide.

Chelsea did improve after the introduction of Olivier Giroud and it looked like they might grab a point when Hazard fired in a fantastic shot from 25 yards.

But parity did not last long as Watford responded in stunning fashion.

Janmaat made it 2-1 in the 85th minute when he played a one-two, danced away from a couple of tackles and finished into the bottom corner. Deulofeu then fired in from Doucoure's through ball before Pereyra fired home in injury-time to round off a thumping win.

Opta stats
- Chelsea have now lost more league games this season (6) than they did in the entire 2016-17 campaign (5).
- The Blues have lost consecutive Premier League games by a 3+ goal margin for the first time since October 1995 (1-4 vs Man Utd, 0-3 vs Blackburn).
- All three of Troy Deeney's Premier League goals this season have been penalties against 'big six' sides (Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea).

The managers
Javi Gracia: "You always work for nights like this but this is unforgettable. I am very proud of my team and my players and very happy for our fans to enjoy a great victory."

Antonio Conte on his future: "It is not my problem. I try to do my job. I try to put everything in my job. If this is enough, it's ok. Otherwise they can take their decision."
Three players have now received red cards for fouls on Richarlison this season (Davinson Sanchez, Jonathan Hogg and Tiemoue Bakayoko), more than any other player in the division.
Chelsea have been shown seven red cards in all competitions this season, two more than any other Premier League side (Watford 5).

Apple sells fewer phones but profits rise

apple

Apple sold slightly fewer iPhones in the final three months of 2017 than it did the year before, but higher prices compensated for the dip.

The firm reported a record $20bn (£14bn) in quarterly profits, driven by strong growth in Japan and Europe.

The results were the first official glimpse of sales figures for Apple's expensive iPhone X.

Chief executive Tim Cook said demand for the product, which starts at about $1,000, had surpassed expectations.

Quarterly sales at the firm climbed by 13% year-on-year to a record $88.3bn.

After an initial fall, Apple shares climbed more than 3% in after-hours trade.

Apple released the iPhone X in November, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the device.

And while the overall number of iPhones sold in the period slipped by 1% year-on-year to 77.3 million, the iPhone X had been the top-selling Apple handset every week since its launch, Mr Cook said.

However the tech giant also issued a weaker-than-expected sales forecast for coming months, which appears to reinforce investor concerns that demand for Apple products may be dimming.

Timid quarter, but not problematic
Analysis: Dave Lee, BBC North America technology reporter, San Francisco

Last year Apple launched three new iPhones, but one was not like the others.

The iPhone X was the main event, the talk of the town. In contrast, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus felt obsolete before Tim Cook had even finished his presentation. Investors were worried that the presence of the iPhone X would put off people buying the cheaper iPhones. And, given the X started at $999, those people may decide not to buy an iPhone at all.

And that appears to be basically what happened. Apple sold marginally fewer iPhones compared with this time last year (though the company blamed that on a shorter accounting period compared with the same time in 2016).

With the average selling price going up by around $100, to $796, it means Apple may be selling fewer iPhones, but it is making more from each one.

Apple investors will be seeing it like this: selling fewer iPhones but dramatically upping the price is certainly one way to solve that ever-present supply chain headache.

So, a timid quarter by Apple's unparalleled standards. But by no means a problem.

'Extremely engaged'
Mr Cook said he was not over-concerned by the dip in handset sales, adding that the 1.3 billion active Apple devices around the world provided a strong customer base for the firm's services businesses, which include Apple Pay.

Analyst Carolina Milanesi, of California-based Creative Strategies, tweeted that "1.3 billion users most of whom are extremely engaged with their devices is why the services numbers will be more and more interesting going forward".

Apple has been under a cloud after revealing that it deliberately slowed batteries in older phones, prompting investigations in several countries.

Apple

It has since apologised, offering customers cheaper batteries and other modifications, though analysts have said that could reduce replacement purchases, potentially affecting the firm's bottom line.

Future growth
Jeff Fieldhack, research director at technology consultancy Counterpoint, said while Apple's opening quarter was "fantastic" for its new devices, it may struggle to keep sales levels up.

"Because of the higher prices, it will be a challenge to keep those volumes going," Mr Fieldhack said.

He added the firm's performance in China, India and other emerging markets would also be crucial to future growth.

Apple has struggled to lure customers away from several rivals in China, the world's largest smartphone market, as it competes against more affordable devices.

It faces similar challenges in India, where the firm currently has just 2% market share . Growing its Indian customer base will be important for future sales, Mr Fieldhack said.

Move over Messi & Ronaldo: Lethal Suarez is La Liga's top scorer in 2018

Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez may have suffered an indifferent start to the season, but he has made up for it in style as he begins 2018 at a goalscoring pace too hot even for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Suarez scored Barcelona's only goal on Thursday as the Catalans squeezed past Valencia 1-0 in the Copa del Rey.

The result might have been even more comfortable for the hosts at Camp Nou were it not for some heroic keeping from Jaume Domenech, but they nevertheless hold the advantage going into the semi-final second leg.

Once again, in a recurring pattern so far in 2018, they had their Uruguayan hitman to thank for victory.

Suarez has now scored nine goals in all competitions this year, more than Messi, Ronaldo or any other La Liga player so far.

That flurry has come in just eight games, with Barca's Copa defeat to Espanyol - in which Suarez entered as a second-half substitute - the only game he ended with a blank.

The striker overall has 20 goals in 29 appearances for his club, having netted just 11 in 21 before Spain's winter break.

Messi has netted eight so far in 2018, while Ronaldo has scored four in his six outings, all in La Liga.

Valencia for one continue to rue the day that Barca swooped for the ex-Liverpool star.

Los Che have seen Suarez score nine goals past them since moving to Spain, making the club his favourite opponent alongside Betis.

Luis Surez

And if he can put in a similar performance at Mestalla Barca will already have one foot in the Copa del Rey final, for a record fifth consecutive season.
